Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport in Tanzania, you’ll be met by a Barking Zebra staff member and driven to tonight’s lodge near Arusha; or, the gateway to your great journey that awaits.
On your first safari set out to Lake Manyara National Park. This small park offers a microcosm of the safari experience to
be found in Tanzania. The diverse landscape includes lush ground water forest hosting baboons, monkeys and canopy dwelling birdlife. Grassy floodplains play home to larger mammals like buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe. Inland one might find the famous tree climbing lions and herds of elephant.
Get an early start for a morning search for a big game in the famous Ngorongoro Crater. We descend 2,000 feet to the floor of the crater, where volcanic slopes shelter the highest concentration of wildlife on the planet. 25,000 or so animals, including the rare rhino, mingle together. You are never out of sight of wildlife.
You’ll have five days to explore the wildlife in the Serengeti and witness the great migration. Words are barely adequate to describe it, and even photos and videos hardly do justice to the enormity of the wildebeest migration.
In order to provide our guests with the best opportunity to witness the great migration time and the location in the Serengeti differs by season.
From December to March, travelers visit southern Serengeti for three days. This is where the wildebeest migrate to calve. Safarists then fly to northern Serengeti for two days to observe the resident wildlife.
From June to October, travelers set out to southern Serengeti for two nights. Safarists then fly to northern Serengeti for three nights, where they hopefully will witness the dramatic river crossing of the wildebeest herds.
Optional activities: Hot-Air Balloon ride in the southern Serengeti complete with champagne breakfast.
After a final morning game drive to say good bye to the bush and take a scenic flight back to Arusha. Spend time visiting a local arts collective and relax in your day room before your evening home-bound flight or continue exploring more of Tanzania by adding on an adventure from our safari extensions collection.
*Advanced reservation required
A Serengeti hot air balloon flight can be included in safari itineraries that include at least two nights in the Central, the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, and seasonally in South Serengeti.
Drifting over the Serengeti plains in the golden morning, taking in the enchanting scenes of wildlife frolicking below and then celebrating with a post-flight champagne breakfast in the bush is a surreal experience.
Your balloon safari launches at sunrise. Depending on wind conditions, you’ll float over the Serengeti for approximately one hour with traveling altitudes reaching up to 1000 feet.
While you may see wildlife, the most incredible part of this experience is the unforgettable bird’s eye view as you gently skim over the tops of acacia trees and observe the pristine landscape from above. Upon descending, you’ll celebrate your journey with a champagne toast and a full English breakfast right on the savannah.
