Greystoke Camp, the original camp in Mahale, is one of the best and most famous in Africa and it has one of the most beautiful and dramatic locations anywhere in East Africa. It sits on a white sandy beach at the base of the 8,000 ft high Mahale Mountains overlooking the turquoise water of Lake Tanganyika.
Mahale Mountains National Park is the best location in Africa for viewing wild chimpanzees. The forests of Mahale Mountains are host to an estimated 700 to 1,000 chimps. Despite being such a remarkable place, there are rarely more than twenty visitors in the park. This inevitably makes one feel rather special and privileged to be here.
The camp has 6 rooms positioned on the edge of the forest line and almost entirely built out of reclaimed dhow wood. The main dining area is the only structure on the beach and it’s the focal point of the camp. Guest at the camp are able to partake in swimming, snorkeling, fishing, canoeing and sailing, all of which adds enormously to the overall experience.
