A Tanzanian safari is a journey of a lifetime. However, if you show up for your first game drive wearing a tank top and flip flops while holding a disposable camera, the adventure may not pan out that well. Barking Zebra wants every journey to succeed, so let’s make sure you have the 7 essential safari items packed and ready for your travels…and please, leave the tank and flip flops at home!
1. Comfortable Clothes
While some travelers may feel the urge to start an entirely new “safari wardrobe” pre-travels, this is definitely not necessary. The basic rule is that, no matter whether your attire is new or old, it should always be comfortable, casual and practical. When deciding on your comfort level, you may want to consider clothing made of newer quick-drying fabrics – e.g., shirts with ventilation and trousers that convert into shorts. Further, note that safari clothing is neutral in color.
2. Comfortable Shoes
3. Camera
Consider a child on Christmas morning. Multiply this sensation by one hundred and you have the feeling of a photographer in Tanzania. The land is overly blessed with stunning wildlife, breathless landscapes and colorful people…all of which are more than picture worthy. If you don’t already have a camera, ensure you buy one of good quality.
4. Binoculars
These are essential for optimum wildlife viewing. Don’t skimp in terms of quality. A good pair of binoculars will have a huge impact on your safari – in a good way! We highly recommend a pair of 8x or 10x magnification.
5. Insect Repellent
Have you ever tried taking a good photo while scratching at a bug bite! Yep, it just isn’t possible. Any safari requires hard-working insect repellent. When looking at options, note the amount of DEET a particular brand contains. Your repellent will last longer as DEET levels increase.
6. Sun Protection
This includes sunscreen, a sunhat and sunglasses. Please take heed in the following advice. Make certain you bring sunscreen and apply it before and after game drives. Pack a wide brimmed hat to reduce direct sun exposure. Maximize eye protection by bringing sunglasses to reduce glare – polarized glasses work the best.
7. Small Medical Kit and Prescription Medication
We’re not talking about a bag that allows you to perform light surgery in the bush. You’re lodge and game drivers will have medical supplies in case of an emergency. But, you want to ensure you pack general medical supplies and ones that pertain to your specific needs – e.g., aspirin, stomach relief meds, band-aides and anti-histamine creams. Further, don’t forget any requisite prescription medications.
Travel preparation goes a long way in ensuring smooth and enjoyable travels. Safari preparation is no different. Please include our 7 tips above in your readiness plans and you’ll be well on your way to maximizing a safe, comfortable and glorious safari adventure!
